White Rose Canoe Club is based in Leeds and has over 100 members, making it one of Yorkshire's largest canoe club. We offer a wide range of events aimed mainly for families. Events range from easy canal and lake paddles through to more technical paddles on Grade 3+ rivers in Yorkshire and other parts of the country. The club is run by canoeing enthusiasts for canoeing enthusiasts of all kinds. We cater for kayaks, open canoes, touring, sea, disabled paddlers and white water paddlers. Who is the club for? We do not have any age restriction, but you must be able to swim 50 metres or, if disabled, be happy to go underwater. Young people will need the permission of their parents or guardians to join the club. Parents must also be available to take and collect younger members to and from the events. Although we are more a recreational club than a competitive one, we encourage paddlers to try out the various aspects of paddlesport. We have a strong canoe polo section, and club members also compete in slalom and marathon racing. Where do we meet? We are based in North East Leeds. During the winter (September to April). we hold pool sessions most Sunday evenings, except school holidays, at Fearnville Leisure Centre in Leeds. During the summer we also hold sessions on the lake at Roundhay Park. We have recently received a grant from Sport England, and this money has been used to develop a permanent base on the site of the old boat house at Roundhay Park. Regular Tuesday night training sessions will recommence at Roundhay Park in Spring 2008. If you have not been canoeing before, we recommend you attend one of our pool introductory courses - this will get you off to a flying start and teach you all the basic strokes. What does the club have to offer? The club offers in-house certificates for indoor canoeing at one and two star level, and structured training sessions are available if you want to improve your skills. For younger paddlers we offer the Paddlepower scheme, which teaches good paddling technique and encourages youngsters to go on river trips and try out a variety of different events and canoes. White Rose Canoe Club is affiliated to the BCU and has been awarded Top Community Club and Sport England's Club Mark awards. (Accredited February 2004).
