For coaching purposes, the region is divided into seven areas. Each of the seven areas has a Local Coaching Organiser (LCO) who is elected locally. All courses for Levels 1 - 3 Coach must be notified 2 months in advance and accepted by the Regional Coaching Officer before BCU approval can be given.

Coaching in the region is looked after by a Coaching Meeting held in March and September each year to discuss problems and developments in coaching. In addition, each of the LCO's hold regular informal meetings for Coaching Scheme Members in their own area in order to exchange information and ideas and get to know the members better. Anyone in the region who is involved with coaching can attend.

Courses for the beginner and beyond

Courses in kayaking and canoeing are available for all ages and all levels of paddler, from beginners to those capable of tackling the wildest water in the region. All clubs within the region offer some form of introductory coaching often via the BCU Star Tests, and the vast majority offer specialist and more advanced coaching both in recreational and competitive canoeing.
