INTRODUCTION

The exciting team sport of Canoe Polo is one at which Great Britain excels. There are internationally agreed rules and World and European championships. The British men's team are current World Champions.

Teams of five paddlers compete to score goals in a suspended net, 2 metres above the water, the ball being thrown by hand or flicked with the paddle. Pitches can be set up either in swimming pools or on any stretch of flat water.  The game provides for excellent teamwork and promotes both general canoeing skills as well as a range of skills unique to the sport.

Canoe Polo is now a formal part of the coaching service, with its own version of the Star Tests, which provide a formal structure for those seeking an introduction to the sport.  There are coaching qualifications although many people learn to play in a more informal way, and join a regional league at one of the frequent friendly tournaments. The Yorkshire region has a thriving system of leagues with tournaments going on throughout the year.

There are competitions for men and women and under 18s.  The National Canoe Polo Championships are run on a knockout basis and are open to any team, with early rounds being organised on a local basis.  There is also a network of very active local leagues.
