EXCITEMENT AND PERSONAL CHALLENGE - AN ULTIMATE TEST OF SKILL! Speed and precision is crucial as slalomists need to squeeze through a series of gates without making contact to avoid penalty seconds being added to the time taken to paddle from start to finish. Typical races take place over a short stretch of river, usually around 300 meters in length. Four individual categories are contested, women's and men's individual kayak, Canadian singles and Canadian doubles. Team events also take place at most events. There is a divisional system and newcomers start in division 4, where water conditions are more suitable for beginners. Most competitions organised by approved Clubs or groups take place at weekends between March and October throughout the UK. Recreational canoeists are urged to try slalom, as the all-important skills necessary to negotiate a white water course with gates, also improve boat control and improve confidence. Competent white water paddlers can enter the divisional system at Division 3 level!
