The club was founded in 1993 by Esther Mathews. It is an 'open' club and It has grown to be one of the largest and most active clubs in the area. It is particularly strong in slalom and in training, coaching and skills development.

However, it also has a number of polo teams at various levels in regional and national divisions and runs various trips to local rivers and other paddling venues throughout the year. The club has just been awarded 'Top Community Club' and 'Clubmark' status and is currently pursuing 'Top Performance Club' status also.

The objectives of the club are:

  • To get as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, enjoying the sport and recreation of canoeing.
  • To provide an environment and the basic essential equipment to enable members to extend their skills and enhance their individual performance, with due regard to safety.
  • To encourage members to teach others and thus pass on their skills and expertise.
  • To encourage fair play and consideration for the feelings of others.

Where do we meet?

Through the winter months, the club is based at St James' Swimming Pool in the centre of Doncaster where it runs regular club sessions for rescue and general skills, slalom and polo training. These are usually held on Saturday afternoons (3pm but check before travelling as the pool times do tend to change) and on one evening/week (varies) mainly for polo training.

In summer, the club moves outside to Hatfield Water Park on the east side of Doncaster. Various sessions are held on weekday evenings and weekends.

Sessions are always run by a qualified instructor helped by experienced club members.

What does the club have to offer?

Paddlers can gain BCU 1* to 4* certification and are encouraged to take qualifications in first aid, lifeguarding, CST and coaching if they wish.

Want to know more?

The club always welcomes newcomers and can usually lend all the equipment needed to get people started so, if you want to try canoeing for the first time, or maybe get back into it, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it on 01302 535941 or see the website at http://www.greenstarcanoeclub.co.uk/
